The Fantastic Four are a superhero team known as Marvel's first family, having first appeared way back in 1961 in The Fantastic Four #1. Originally a team of astronauts, the quartet consist of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, and they gained superpowers - depending on the source material - either when they were exposed to a cosmic storm whilst on a space mission or having been exposed to an alternate dimension. In a nutshell, Reed Richards gained the power of elasticity and became Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm gained the power of invisibility and became the Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm gained the power of a fiery form and became the Human Torch and Ben Grimm gained a rock-like hide and became the Thing (although a number of more esoteric powers accompanied the transformations as well).
