10 Widely Mocked Comic Book Villains That Get A Bad Press

7. MODOK (Marvel)

First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #93, 1967 MODOK is widely mocked thanks largely to his appearance - but he is far from being a joke when it comes to the level of threat he presents to Marvel's heroes. He was originally George Tarleton - a technician working for the organisation known as Advanced Idea Mechanics (or A.I.M.). When A.I.M. created the hugely powerful Cosmic Cube, A.I.M. used mutagenics to enhance Tarleton's intelligence to a level that he could study and improve it in order to use it to gain universal power. Although he was created as MODOC (Mental Organism Designed Only for Computing), he became ambitious and hungry for power. As a result, he renamed himself MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing), killed his former masters and took over control of A.I.M. as an organisation. This brings him in to conflict with Captain America (who was trying to rescue Sharon Carter from A.I.M.'s custody) and MODOK would become a recurring Captain America foe, but what people sometimes forget is that he has proven to be a thorn in the side of much more powerful opponents, like Doctor Doom and Namor. MODOK possesses a superhuman intelligence (as previously touched upon), probability manipulation that verges on precognition, the ability to control large groups of people and machines, and a wide variety of weapons, including missiles and lasers, that he had built in to his support suit (which was created to support his enlarged head, which kept growing after his initial mutagenic treatment). He can also hover in his suit and it can project forcefields that can protect him from nuclear explosions. Essentially, he's a pretty big gun.
