In comics news this week, Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin & Hobbes, won the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix (a kind of lifetime achievement award) at the biggest comic convention in the world, the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The famously reclusive comics creator was not in attendance but the award is the second time an American has won, the last being Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, who won 2 years ago. Calvin & Hobbes ended in 1996 but Watterson's anti-commercial artistic integrity and the quality of his work has won him many admirers and the strip continues to be popular to this day. There's a rumour going around that Geoff Johns' new ongoing project will be Superman. Johns has been dropping titles left and right, handing off Aquaman to Jeff Parker and finishing his acclaimed Green Lantern run last year, and with Forever Evil coming to an end shortly, his only remaining title would be Justice League. Superman has been a title fraught with problems since the New 52 launched so maybe Johns can give the title some of the prestige and sales it deserves. Kick-Ass artist John Romita Jr is rumoured to be the artist attached to the series. Stan Sakai, the creator of Usagi Yojimbo, has recently fallen upon financial difficulties due to his wife Sharon's illness. The comics community helped out a few months ago and now a book called The Sakai Project is being assembled by Dark Horse featuring the best in comics talent today with all proceeds to go to Stan and Sharon. Among the artists contributing to the book, which will celebrate 30 years of Usagi Yojimbo, are: Dave Gibbons, Geof Darrow, Walter Simonson, Mike Mignola, Tim Sale, Alex Maleev, Brian Michael Bendis, Eric Powell, Howard Chaykin, Jeff Smith, Matt Groening, Matt Wagner, Michael Allred, Richard Corben, and Michael Avon Oeming. The Sakai Project comes out on 23 July. And speaking of awards, GLAAD, the advocacy group for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, has announced their nominees for Outstanding Comic Book for the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. JH Williams III, W. Haden Blackman and Marc Andreyko's Batwoman, Cullen Bunn and Will Sliney's Fearless Defenders, Paul Kupperberg and Fernando Ruiz's Life with Archie, Jane Espenson, Brad Bell and Ron Chan's Husbands, and Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton's Young Avengers are all nominated for the award that recognizes work that portrays LGBT people in fair, original and inclusive ways. The winners will be announced at the ceremonies in Los Angeles on 12 April and New York City on 3 May. That's the comics news, onto the comics of the week!
