5 Awesome Comics You Must Read This Week (21 March)

1. Sex Criminals #5 by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky (Image)

Sexcrim5 Cov 575d7 Who catches the sex criminals? Ghostbust... no. The sex police! Presumably they're then tried by the sex judges...? Our heroes Suzie and Jon break into the bank that's foreclosing on Suzie's library to steal enough money to keep its doors open but are caught by the sex police. The sex police are out to keep people who can enter The Quiet (the psychedelic time-frozen world that appears when someone with the power, ahem, "climaxes") from being caught and maintain a low profile. We also learn more about Jon's life before Suzie and the reason behind his choice of toilet. Sex Criminals #5 is as fantastic as every single issue has been so far €“ the great tone of the story, balancing comedy, action, and drama wonderfully, the brilliant set pieces, and I love how Suzie and Jon's relationship continues to develop. There's an interesting and funny discussion about treating behavioural disorders with or without medication, and Chip Zdarsky's art continues to be a revelation. The comic is flawless and that's more than enough for anyone to read it. BUT €“ the stuff around the comic is what's even better. Like the bad poetry that opens the issue summarising the series so far or the photo at the end of Chip Zdarsky skinny dipping in a pool watched over by a deceased Matt Fraction (don't do it, Matt!). But the best part is the 7 pages of fan letters which are getting funnier and funnier. It's getting to a point now where Matt and Chip could do an entirely separate non-comic book comprised entirely by the letters! Sex Criminals #5 closes out the first story arc for Suzie and Jon and ends with the perfect lines: "So we ran. Like a couple of goddamn criminals." These guys... Sex Criminals is a series every comics fan should be reading €“ it's just stunning. And this is the only series that has characters and readers making kegelfaces. What are kegelfaces? Bing it! * Those are my picks for the best comics of the week €“ what comics did you enjoy this week? Let me know in the comments below!
