1. She-Hulk #2 - Charles Soule And Javier Pulido (Marvel)
Jen Walters, aka She-Hulk, has left behind her lucrative role at a high-end law firm and struck out on her own, opening up her own office in Dumbo, NYC, and begun recruiting a receptionist - who brings her own monkey to work and has one facial expression (and probably one tone of voice too)! But clients, like any new business, are non-existent to start with so to cheer herself up Jen goes on a night out with her pal, Patsy Walker aka Hellcat, which, this being a Marvel comic, ends with a big robot fight! I love how Charles Soule is writing this series. He's bringing his own law experience to the character making all the aspects of Jen's professional life seem realistic, while also knowing to balance it out with the fantastical and fun. Like Jen's office is leased only to super-powered folk who aren't able to rent space elsewhere because other landlords won't let them (insurance premiums are too high thanks to all the devastating superhero fights!). Soule's building up Jen's world so that it's distinctly her own but also firmly within the main Marvel Universe. So Jen has her own things going on - getting her life, both personal and professional, in gear - but also has her own cast like her chipper landlord, her deadpan but funny receptionist (and of course monkey) and now Hellcat (who rarely gets to make an appearance anywhere in the Marvel U) is a part of this series now too. Javier Pulido's art is fantastic. If you saw his work on Matt Fraction's Hawkeye, you'll know what to expect, but if not then you'll fall for it completely in this book. All of the panels look very neatly put together in a seemingly simple way with clean lines but the way they're laid out is where it becomes really effective. The big half page spread of Jen and her landlord walking through the building or when she's calling up all her contacts to get work, are all effects we've seen before in other comics but work so beautifully in this issue. What could take several pages to present is done in a compressed yet artful way that makes full use of the medium to show us how a story can be told in a comic in the best way possible. She-Hulk #2 is a really smart, really pretty, and really fun comic - it's about time Jen got her time in the spotlight! Don't miss Charles Soule/Javier Pulido's modern masterpiece-in-the-making, She-Hulk! * Those are my picks for the week. I know this week was very Marvel oriented but what can I say, they're unstoppable right now! Simply, they are the world's #1 comics publisher for a reason. But, a lot of other comics came out this week so let me know what your favourites were in the comments below!
