6 Awesome Comics You Must Read This Week (13 February)
3. Manifest Destiny #4 By Chris Dingess And Matthew Roberts (Image)
Lewis and Clark: Monster Hunters continues with another cracking issue. The group have made it to the final outpost on the western frontier, La Charrette, but have found its inhabitants transformed into terrifying Swamp Thing-esque zombies! Not only that but they're being hunted by minotaurs with buffalo heads buffalotaurs! In this issue, after they've cleared the camp of zombies, they make a plan to head back to the ship, back to safety, through the buffalotaurs - and that's when they meet Sacagawea, a silent, lethal Native American woman. And their guide. I'm really enjoying this great series that reimagines the famed American explorers Lewis and Clark as secretly heading west to determine the threat these monsters pose to the young Republic. Chris Dingess' script keeps things moving at a nice clip with multiple interesting and mysterious things being thrown at the small band of adventurers, as their voyage goes from bad to worse to nightmarish. A member of the group is infected with the green plant-like virus that turned the inhabitants of La Charrette into zombies which goes the way you'd expect if you've seen lots of zombie movies where someone becomes bitten and slowly turn. But the page when that happens? Wow. You could say Wow about every page of this comic - it's just stunning to look at. The characters are wonderfully drawn from the way their outfits look, to their emotive facial expressions, and the issue contains some absolutely beautiful panels. A small panel that shows daybreak is amazing as is Sacagawea's entrance, her fight against the buffalotaurs, and the aforementioned green zombie page - wow! Manifest Destiny is an excellent series, taking the popular American story of these famous explorers in a strange land and throwing in fantasy violence, mythological monsters, and zombies galore, and it all works really well together. If you're a fan of Lost, you'll enjoy this. Manifest Destiny #4 is another fine issue in a series that's definitely worth reading.
