1. Captain America: Living Legend #1 By Andy Diggle And Adi Granov (Marvel)
Which leads us to our sixth, last and best comic of the week - Andy Diggle and Adi Granov's Captain America: Living Legend. Like the Punisher comic, this too is a limited series (4 issues) and is most notable for being Adi Granov's return to comics. As far as I know Granov has drawn just one comic so far - Warren Ellis' amazing Iron Man: Extremis - and has been exclusively a cover artist since then, so it's great to see him return to drawing the comics too; as you can tell from the cover, he is quite talented. Andy Diggle and Adi Granov's ambitious story starts off in the closing days of WW2 as Allied Forces storm a Nazi bunker in Bavaria only to reveal a hidden Nazi rocket scientist. As those interested in history know, in the wake of Germany's defeat all of the Nazi rocket scientists were divided up between the Americans and the Russians, with America gaining the most, helping America reach the moon first in the 1960s, so they were quite a valuable haul. This is also the first time Cap encounters a patriotic Soviet soldier called Volkov who would attempt a space launch in 1968 and whose fate remains, so far, unknown. Flash forward to the present day and Cap sees the name Volkov once more in relation to a doomed experiment in a space station, trying to create unlimited, clean energy. What does it all mean? We'll have to read on to find out. The story has a lot of nice twists and turns and contains enough mystery to sustain this pacy read. Diggle is an excellent writer and DC really dropped the ball when they lost him on Action Comics earlier this year - but DC's loss is Marvel's gain and Living Legend looks to be a brilliant mini-series. Granov's art is of course the star of the book though. Cap's first appearance is so good, I wish it were a poster I could hang on my wall, and the sequence where he takes out a Panzer tank is brilliant. Granov's art has only gotten better since Extremis and fans of his style will adore this comic. Captain America: Living Legend is off to a great start with this first issue especially as it looks to feature weird deformed humans - a speciality with Granov! Definitely the best comic of the week, check it out guys. * Those are my picks for this week - I know Forever Evil #2 came out but... meh. Other comics came out too that I didn't mention, so what're your picks for this week? Let me know in the comments below!
