6 Reasons Why Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity Was Absolute Drivel

Infinity Drivel Guys, you'll never guess what - Jonathan Hickman's written a new 6-part (16 if you count the tie-ins) Marvel Event and it's about something massive: the end of the world! Isn't that exciting?! No. Not even a bit. Why? Because every single Jonathan Hickman story is about the end of the world. His Avengers title is about the ends of alien worlds. His New Avengers title is about the Illuminati ending parallel worlds. Going beyond his Marvel books, titles like East of West and God Is Dead are about the end of the world. It's lazy narrative shorthand from a writer who doesn't know how to make the reader care about their story to make it seem like their story is important. Hey, this matters - the end of the world is at stake! Yeah, been there, done that, Hickman. So what's he got in the bag for Infinity? The end of the world. And the end of other alien worlds. Take a bow, Mr Original! But take heart, gullible, I mean, faithful Marvel reader, because this is one Marvel Event that really matters! Not like Age of Ultron - which supposedly put the kaibosh on time travel and actually had no effect on literally everyone in the Marvel U time travelling - or the end of any Marvel Event, ever (see: comics history). No, this time the end of Infinity will mean something! It'll change EVERYTHING! Except it didn't. A few new Inhumans popped up, Thanos' son stood up then quickly left, and that was it. Nobody important died, no major characters' lives were changed, a few billion aliens ate it but hey, that's not important because Cap got to pretend he matters in an intergalactic space war where entire planets were obliterated and where nothing he did had any effect on anything in the story! But he does have a new movie coming out in a few months... While this article takes a critical look at the story and writing of Infinity, I will say that I had no problem with the art. Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena, and Dustin Weaver all brought their A-game to this D-grade script and did an amazing job of bringing this superhero/space epic to life. Hats off to you gentlemen. So let's take a look at why this Event was absolute drivel from start to finish and see how Jonathan Hickman stretched his audiences' patience to infinity and beyond.
