While Frank Miller undoubtedly had a hand in creating the modern and most iconic incarnation of Batman, Dennis O'Neil deserves just as much if not more credit for creating that very same image.

In the seventies, O'Neil - along with artist Neal Adams - set out to return the Dark Knight to his darker, vigilante persona and in-turn smash the notion that cast the character as a Silver Age icon. It worked, and among several of the characters the writer introduced was Ra's Al Ghul, a villain that - to this day - is commonly regarded as being among the very best Bat-villains.

The O'Neil-Adams partnership would also birth the seminal Green Arrow/Green Lantern series, which saw the duo embark on a socially-conscious road trip through the Nixonian United States that - in no small way - defined both characters for years afterwards. Stints on Green Arrow and Batman aside, O'Neil also had a hand in reinvigorating the Question - a classic character from Steve Ditko's library - during the eighties, and lent his talents to Marvel on several occasions.

There are few writers out there able to boast an influence as great as O'Neil, and yet his name has been largely omitted from the pantheon of great Bat-writers. His influence on the medium is considerable, and Bat fans especially have much to thank him for.
