9 Comics You Should Be Reading Right Now

From superheroism to occultism.

Batman #27
DC Comics

To keep up with every comic book storyline that's currently in motion, you'd either need a lot of time on your hands or some kind of superpower.

One only has to venture into a comic shop and check out its jam-packed shelves to appreciate how many titles are in print, and is it any wonder given how old the industry is and the renewed attention it's received since superheroes conquered Hollywood?

As keeping up with them all is costly and physically impossible, fans must cherrypick a select few to invest their time in, but brace yourself for tough decisions.

Newcomers to the medium have it easy, given how the internet is bursting with lists of the greatest superhero stories ever told, although things are tricker for seasoned readers who prefer to stay current.

So, in terms of the stories in play right now, where should you start? How about with the rebirth of some iconic heroes, terrifying horror tales unbound by the limitations of special effects, and the best indie stories you've been overlooking all this time?

9. Astonishing X-Men

Batman #27
Marvel Comics

Marvel Comics has painted its X-Men universe into a corner in recent years, hence why it's been overhauling it with the ongoing ResurrXion event.

Many of the relaunch titles have missed the mark so far, but that's about to change because those uncanny mutants are ready to astonish again.

Written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Jim Cheung, Astonishing X-Men kicks off with a new number one and assembles a team of fan-favourite characters, spearheaded by the X-Universe's badass-in-chief Old Man Logan.

The series is clearly designed to serve as a jumping-on point for newcomers who haven't been keeping up with their X-Men continuity, as well as a fan-pleasing flagship for the new status quo ResurrXion is establishing.

Whether you're an X-virgin, a lapsed reader returning to the series or a diehard who was disappointed with the other ResurrXion titles, this is a comic to check out.
