Avengers: Infinity - Will We See Captain America Become The Nomad?

The Russos weigh in on killing off [SPOILER]

Despite the multiple predictions that Civil War was going to leave several Avengers dead and the MCU in a darker place than either of the previous two phases, there was no way anyone major was actually going to be killed off. Even with the finale of the source comic seeing the infamous death of Captain America, there was always more chance of a narrative swerve than a true adaptation.

We've already heard from the writers on that front, who confirmed they didn't want to follow the comics and introduce another fake out death like in The Winter Soldier, and now the Russos have weighed in to explain why they didn't go for it. Said Joe Russo:

"Frankly, it just seemed like an easy ending. We thought a more complicated ending would be more interesting -- to see the ramifications of that moving forward. Killing Cap ends that conceptually. There would be guilt on Tony's part."

Anthony went further on the same point:

"We were saying to ourselves, the genre - and perhaps the MCU - has gotten to a point where the audience are sensing the patterns in the genre. Joe and I have always been about: how do we subvert genre? The more difficult and more interesting place to leave a family fight is: can these important relationships ever be repaired? Is this family broken permanently?"

So, it would seem that Infinity War will not start with a Thanos shaped bang, but with the ideas established at the end of Civil War. That might not have been the case if the Disney dissenters who wanted the movie to end with the team reunited had got their way. According to Kevin Feige, the Russos wouldn't entertain the idea.

Anthony Russo also revealed what the future holds for Steve Rogers now that he's symbolically dropped his iconic shield:

"Dropping the shield is a rejection of the Captain America identity and a choice to embrace the Steve Rogers identity."

Joe Russo went further, calling him a "full-blown insurgent":

"The most interesting thing you can do is to take him from a patriot in the first film to an insurgent in the third movie."

This couldn't be more firmly set up for Rogers to become Nomad, as he did in the comics.

On the page, Rogers grew disillusioned with the government when it turned out they were a duplicitous, corrupt lot. Abandoning his Cap persona, Rogers is still drawn to heroism and takes on the name Nomad to reflect the fact that he's a man without a country. So, will we get to see Nomad's costume in Infinity War Part One?

So what of the other famous shield wielder who has also been driven underground? Kevin Feige teased Bucky's future too in the most vague way possible: "It... remains to be seen. He's certainly in stasis there. Where and when he comes out? I'm not sure..."
