Comic Review: Batgirl #9

You must be in the routine for these Bat-family titles by now right?

Book: Batgirl #9Written By: Gail SimonePencils By: Ardian SyafPublisher: DC ComicsRelease Date: OUT NOW IN STORES & DIGITAL DOWNLOAD (VIA COMIXOLOGY)Rating:Rating: ˜…˜† You must be in the routine for these Bat-family titles by now right? In Batgirl #9 we feature a flashback to 1944 that begins our story of the Owl Talon Assassin that Batgirl is going to tussle with and then Alfred calls in the Bat family telling them about what's happening in Gotham. Oh and Batgirl also comments an Owl Assassin fights like Nightwing. (That's twice a Bat-team member has done that now....mmmm?) All that happens here as expected but somehow Batgirl #9 feels like the end of wave one and the beginning of wave two of the Night of Owls (even though some of the events have been read already). The fights start with Batgirl already mid-scrap with a female Assasin but the real story here is with James Gordon. He's approached by an unseen Owl and told he mustn't do anything about the attacks. Don't call in Batman, don't cause a stir and if he tries to his daughter will die. From here on in it's a juggernaut of pressure on Jim's shoulders. Details of what's going on in the other Bat-comics and around the city, explosions at the GCPD and a real test for Jim, to see if he'll stick to the rules. Meanwhile Batgirl is suited up and called in by Alfred and has a rematch with her female Owl Assassin. We get to see the full impact of the Night of Owls on a Gotham City level and it's not pretty at all. Balloon bombs, tampering with the Bat-signal and a whole lot of nastiness setting the scene for what's to come in the next wave of Night of the Owls. Sure what we're left with feels sort of similar to any other good Batman crossover event (city in peril etc) and from here on in I'm pretty sure the Bat-families spin off stories will simply involve protecting innocent Gothamites while Batman does all the real Owl work but Batgirl #9 ends with a distinct turning point to these one on one Assassin take downs we're seen so far, so next week in Birds of Prey, Catwoman, Nightwing and Red Hood and the Outlaws could prove interesting. Round 1 to the Owls but now they've got Batman's pissed.
