Marvel Announce Year One Amazing Spider-Man Series: Learning To Crawl

Amazing Spiderman Spider-Man writer Dan Slott has announced a Year One-esque Spider-Man mini-series to coincide with Peter Parker's return to the Marvel Universe, the AP reports. Peter Parker has been absent for nearly a year and a half while his nemesis Doc Ock has occupied his body as the Superior Spider-Man. That storyline is coming to a close and Peter will be returning as the one and only Amazing Spider-Man this summer. To celebrate this, Slott - who has written Spider-Man since 2008 - will go back to his origins when Peter first became Spider-Man and explore his reactions to his new superpowers, becoming a masked vigilante, and juggling school and the loss of Uncle Ben at the same time. Slott says the series will pay homage to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's comics from the early 60s, while also filling in a lot of the blanks their run brought up:
"When you're looking at things in those issues, you're going: 'Wait a minute! How did this happen? How did he get this? Where did this come from? Why didn't Aunt May ever wonder about that?'"
Slott says the series is a chance for him to explore the character of Peter in a lot more depth than just focusing on the superhero he'll become.
"You start looking at it closer and closer and you go, 'There's a story here that we're not seeing... A very pivotal and crucial story that lovingly respects everything that went on but tells you more, so much more about Spider-Man and so much more about Peter Parker."
Slott also mentioned that there will be a new villain for Peter to battle, a person who is inspired by coverage of Spider-Man's appearance.
"Someone's running around trying to be just like Spider-Man and there's no way in Peter's mind that he's not responsible for everything that guy's going to do... He's a troubled teen hero fighting a troubled teen villain!"
Learning To Crawl will be a five issue mini-series running from May to September, numbered in Marvel's Point One style - 1.1 - 1.5. Joining Slott will be artist Ramon Perez who will draw the interiors with Alex Ross painting all five covers. The Amazing Spider-Man: Learning To Crawl begins on May 7
