Captain Marvel hits theatres this Friday, marking Carol Danvers' first appearance in live action and the start of what promises to be a 'distinctly different' era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's been a longtime coming for the character, who's been at the heart of Marvel's comics for just over five decades now, but it's looking as though the film has been worth the wait.
As you can probably imagine, the fact that Danvers has been around for so long also means that she has a long, compelling, and somewhat complex history. She hasn't always been called Captain Marvel, for instance, and with it being only recently that Danvers has taken on a new kind of popularity, it may just be the case that quite a few fans aren't as clued up on her backstory as they may think.
This is all well and good of course, but the fact remains that Marvel's most recent Captain boasts an intricate (albeit occasionally controversial) past, that few too little readers have grown accustomed to in the years since her debut.
Fortunately, with the arrival of Brie Larson's depiction of the character, that could yet change. Danvers is being heralded as something of a game-changer for Marvel going forward, but with her past still a somewhat guarded secret, do fans really know her as well as they think?
