Reality Check #1 Review

Realitycheck01 Cover

Reality Check is the latest offering from Image Comics this month and is written by Glen Brunswick (Jersey Gods) with art provided by Viktor Bogdonavic. In this first issue we are introduced to the main character of the new comic called Willard Penn, who is struggling to find his way of comic book writing. This could be seen as a love letter from Brunswick himself, in how difficult it is to get into the industry. The reader is shown in a couple of panels how some of the larger companies within the world of comic book production (cough....DC....cough....Marvel) say they are interested in you, but never end up getting back in touch with any actual projects. Due to this comic being released by Image and their love of creator owned characters and work; it is no surprise that Penn is shown creating his own superhero and comic book, called Dark Hour. Whilst it could be seen as somewhat self-indulgent that a comic creator has shown the world that it is not as easy as some may think to get their work noticed, and the struggle it is to get their ideas out of their head and onto the page, it doesn't focus solely on this problem. Penn is finally given the chance to get his work out to the reading public, albeit after an altercation with a couple of females at a coffee shop; who didn't really appreciate his sketching of them (it certainly wasn't a "draw me like one of your French girls, Jack" moment). Everything seems to be going swimmingly for Willard from this point, but he is ultimately struck with writers block and cannot finish the story arc that he so desperately needs. This however is not the worst of his problems! His main character has come to visit him in the middle of night; the real life, honest to god version from the pages of his comic book is standing outside of the apartment. The comic shows some real promise and whilst it may only be 4 issue mini-series, there is certainly a lot of ground for Brunswick and Bogdonavic to cover. It is going to be interesting to see where it all leads.
