10 Alternate Endings That Improve Movies

9. The Butterfly Effect - Evan Commits Suicide As A Fetus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqKWxAmOLaM In the stakes of being absolutely bat-s**t crazy, few alternate endings go as far off the deep-end as this one for the unfairly-maligned supernatural drama The Butterfly Effect. If the original cut was silly enough, this takes it to a whole new dimension, as Evan realises that the only way to stop everyone around him from becoming screw-ups is if he never existed. As a result, Evan decides to end his life before it even begins, choking himself with his own umbilical cord in the womb, which we witness through a combination of ultra-sound and relatively impressive CGI (especially considering that it wasn't used). Just as intended, everything turns out alright for love interest Amy Smart and everyone else, though the thought that kept lingering in our minds is that his mother (played by Melora Waters) has now suffered her fourth miscarriage, and given how invested in this pregnancy she was, we wouldn't be surprised if this resulted in a mental breakdown and possible suicide anyway. Nevertheless, it's a better ending because it avoids maudlin schmaltz in favour of something that just embraces its own sense of ridiculousness and totally goes with it; that is definitely something to admire.
