May is now upon us, so what better way to celebrate the fact that we're more than a third way through 2014 than to countdown the best films that have been offered up so far? This year has been an interesting one for film; we've been treated to what feels like an endless stream of innovative indie flicks (many of which have made our list), explosive superhero movies (you'll find one here), and all that falls inbetween - some good, some not so good. If there hasn't been a clear "masterpiece" amongst this year's releases yet, well... it's early days. We still have time! When compiling our list here, then, the qualifications for consideration were as follows: any movie released theatrically for the first time in either the UK or the US either between January 1st 2014 and right now were permitted for inclusion. Even if the movie debuted in the middle of last year at a film festival but didn't see a theatrical release until this year, we've categorised it as a 2014 movie. That in mind, we've opted for those pictures we felt have defined the year, impressive the critics, pleased audiences in their masses, and - most importantly - have stayed with us since...
