10. War of the Worlds
Munich was awesome, was it not? So it is understandable that when any director attempts to make a big budget adaptation of a much beloved novel in the same year as making a classic such as the previously mentioned, then youd expect some rubbish to emerge. An initial viewing of War of the Worlds is littered with tuts, scoffs and even the occasional snore. But second time around, it is almost as if a completely different film has presented itself. No surprises in the fact that Steven Spielberg CAN in fact produce two equally brilliant films simultaneously. After all, this is the man who made Jurassic Park and Schindlers List back to back. War of the Worlds is riddled with tension and visual flair, which show how a director as talented as Spielberg can literally make a stone cold classic in his sleep. We are all familiar with the nail biting moments such as Tim Robbins' basement freak out and the lynch mob stealing Cruises car. But the brilliance of Spielberg has always been in the quiet moments, and the way he blocks scenes. Watch the film again, but this time, do it from the perspective of a child. Suddenly things become a whole lot scarier.
