10 Essential Monster Movies You Need To See Before Godzilla

8. Rodan (1956)

Movie Monster: Giant Prehistoric pterosaur Rodan is a creature that has long-time Godzilla fans talking. Some seem to think he's going to make an appearance come May. Looking at the trailer, you can understand their logic. We see something crash into the water; something which appears to have wings. Is it Rodan? Or could it be Mothra? Both are members of Toho's 'Big Five' alongside Godzilla, Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah. Rodan would be a wonderful addition to the reboot, and history has witnessed him battle Godzilla on a number of occasions. Gareth Edwards has mentioned there won't just be one monster in his movie - but has also said Godzilla's adversary is based on a number of different animals, rather than a pre-existing character. That being said, we would love to see Rodan re-imagined in a modern-day interpretation. As a mutated pterosaur, he has the look and abilities to make some Godzilla set-pieces enthralling - not to mention airborne. One look at the flying kaiju in Pacific Rim (could that have been a close-relative to Rodan? Or even the beast himself?) and you would find it difficult to argue against the fact... plus he can fly faster than the speed of sound.

I love all things imaginative, from the page to the screen, and nurture a soft spot for Donald Sutherland and Daniel Bryan.
