Although MCU films tend not to adapt stories-arcs from the comics beat-for-beat, of course they look towards them for inspiration. The Captain America trilogy owes much of its success to the works of Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting, who presided over a run on Steve Rogers during the mid-to-late 2000s. Likewise, although Avengers: Infinity War takes a lot from Jim Starlin and George Perez's Infinity Gauntlet, it also borrows a lot from Jonathan Hickman's Infinity, published in 2013.

There are several other examples of where Marvel have taken inspiration from their more recent offerings, but Captain Marvel is a unique case. Carol Danvers herself has been around in the House of Ideas' comics since the late sixties, but it's only since the start of this decade that she's undertaken something of a resurgence.

This isn't to discount the work of those who've been involved with the character over the years, but it's equally true that, had Kelly Sue DeConnick and Jamie McKelvie not combined to deliver a new take on the character in 2012, it's doubtful as to whether she'd be in the position she is today. McKelvie was the one who outfitted Carol with her now iconic red, gold and blue get-up, while DeConnick went on to helm several years' worth of material as Danvers took up a new, central position in the Marvel Universe.

DeConnick even has a brief cameo in the film, where she stares at Carol as she exits the L.A. subway.
