Many of the theories surrounding The Last Jedi concern the past: which characters are the offspring of which parents, which dead character set things in motion, and what has happened in the intervening time since The Return Of The Jedi.

If any of it is going to be resolved there will have to be a lot of exposition, and if there’s one thing that kills the momentum of a movie it’s characters spouting large chunks of information at each other.

Setting a good portion of The Last Jedi in the past, with the ‘present’ as a framing device or happening alongside the flashbacks, would be a way to get all this information cross without having it simply told to the audience.

The Force Awakens used snatches of this technique in Rey’s flashback in Maz’s castle. It would be a very unusual way to tell a Star Wars story, but arguably Rogue One was one big flashback (especially its opening scene with a young Jyn Erso and her father Galen), and it might be the only way for all the movie’s answers to come to light.
