If there's any single, predictable expectation of a Hollywood movie, it's that the hero will vanquish the villain, get the girl (or guy) and live happily ever after.
We as audiences have been conditioned to assume that to be the end-game of any film wishing to enjoy commercial success, but of course, that's not always the case.
Sometimes filmmakers will dare to have the hero lose, and worse than that, sometimes they'll fail in a fashion so spectacular it almost seems cruel.
That's certainly true of these 10 (mostly) brilliant films, all of which absolutely put their esteemed heroes thoroughly through the wringer.
That's not to say it was an automatic win for the villain either, but the hero most certainly lost worse than anyone else, falling short where it counted most, typically to the audience's astonishment.
