10 Great Modern Directors Who Are Consistently Overlooked

wes anderson director In an era driven by unnecessary sequels, prequels and reboots, it becomes easy to forget that there are still directors out there who have a desire to make real films. Admist the motion pictures that hit theatres with a huge amount of buzz only to forgotten weeks later, there are some filmmakers who strive to create genuine works of art at every turn. These 10 directors are great filmmakers who, for one reason or another, have been overlooked by the Academy Awards and similar organizations as well as by the mainstream movie-going public. Some of these directors have experienced critical acclaim but do not make the standard dramas that the Academy favors. Others have even received a few nominations but not enough to reflect the quality of their films. The criterion for picking the directors was first, that they have several quality films to their credit. They must also have generally been ignored by the Academy Awards and other similar organizations in terms of nominations and wins. Also, even if they have directed a big film - such as the 8th and 9th entries on this list - they still must not have received the proper credit for it. Included in each entry is the filmography for the director who is listed, so go check out these directors when you have a chance.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
