Threequels often get a bad wrap, even by me, as just last week, for this very website, I wrote something called "
10 Worst Threequels of All Time" and that got me thinking as to what good threequels are out there. Admittedly, there is not a great abundance of them, but there are some, including the 10 on this list that have substantial quality. Threequels are often resigned for major blockbuster franchises, but as this list will prove, foreign independent directors are also prone to a threequel or two, and they don't necessarily have to be gigantic action movies that gross billions at the box-office. Threequels, as with any film, will be good if a director and/or writer sticks to their artistic principles and avoids mass studio interference, though studios do have to be commended for occasionally going in brave directions and supporting grand visions that directors bring to them. This list should prove that there is hope for threequels and that not every threequel has to be as crass and disgusting as Rambo 3. If executed properly, the threequel could be the crowning moment of a series, but if massacred, can destroy all the mythology that the previous films built up.
