Batman might just be the greatest comic book character ever created. The legacy speaks for itself; with over 70 years of history and character development, countless dedicated monthly lines and stand-alone series, and a thriving multi-platform existence, it’s safe to say that he managed to capture the hearts and minds of the world years ago, and has since never really loosened his grip.
Even strictly in cinema, Batman has been a consistently satisfying, and consistently lucrative presence, through Burton’s original films, somehow through Shumacher’s questionable run, and into Nolan’s recent hyper-realistic adaptation (which, while TDKR didn’t manage to outperform the Avengers, still made Warner Bros. silly money in the grand scheme of things).
Now, with the news of a Justice League movie coming to imminent fruition, and the inevitable certainty of a new Batman reboot coming at us at some point in the not-too-distant future, it looks like The Caped Crusader, as a cinematic character, is a permanent fixture.
But hey, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the world can always use more Batman. Over the many, many years the character has existed on the page, so many awesome, eye-popping and character defining moments have come and gone that, if you do the research, it’s quite possible to be as knowledgeable about Batman as you are your own Father.
But which of these awesome moments should be adapted next for screen? It’s a question that’s pretty much always on my mind, so why not join me as I attempt to answer it?

I haven’t read the book, but Year One has been adapted in a 2011 animated movie, and it looks pretty awesome. I think an adaptation of all Frank Miller’s work on the Dark Knight (like the recent Dark Knight Returns) is the greatest Bat thing along with Nolan’s trilogy.
All star batman sucks and I’m sorry although frank miller has done a lot of good stuff he’s probably done even more bad stuff all star just suck BATMAN DOES NOT SAY “cool”!!!! And dark knight strikes again is just awful as well
I would recommend you do some research before talking about certain points. If you consider animated films as films, which you should, almost half of this list is already produced. Death in the Family is in “Under the Red Hood”, Gordon fighting is in “Year One” and Batman with the Mutants/Superman will be in “The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 & 2″. Also Nolan stated that No Man’s Land was a big inspiration for TDKR so you could chalk that up there as well. No Batman V Batman fights though which kind of sucks and I agree with the betrayal aspect (you could argue Catwoman does that in TDKR) but a majority of these powerful moments are already on celluloid.
A great read, written by a very knowledgeable fellow Batfan!. I’ve read Batman for the best part of 40 years and you have covered some great moments in the rich comic history. I do thoroughly agree with Mike McCourt above though, All-Star Batman & Robin is an absolute abomination of a series & I never want to be reminded of it & “the Goddamned Batman” (as Bruce refers to himself in it) ever again, let alone see any part of it on the silver screen!. Frank Miller’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ was a solid (but vastly over-rated) story, but the 2001 sequel is truly awful.
There is some great stuff as you pointed out in the early ‘Legends of the Dark Knight’ issues, and I wholeheartedly agree that ‘Venom’ is one hell of a great story!
I loved ‘A Death in the Family’, but I think the treatment it got in the recent animated movie version of Under the Red Hood has satisfied my need of seeing the story on-screen.
Having Batman paint himself, Robin and an entire room yellow could ONLY work in a comic book…and even that is a stretch. There is no way that could work on film and would rank up there next to Bat nipples in shear stupidity. Think about it and you will see my point…

?? Where is The Reaper? Where is The Reaper?
WHERE IS THE REAPER???!?!?!!!!
yea but superman has beatten batman 2 but no one cares because HE HAS NO SUPERPOWERS
we havent seen batman fail on screen…..*ahem* RACHEL DAWES
Well done. Don’t overlook Matt Wagner. He’s done a lot of Batman work over the years, but none better than his first Batman-Grendel crossover. Hunter Rose (Grendel) is a reflection of Bruce Wayne (Batman) in a lot of ways, save that one went the criminal route, one went the protector route. I think it would be an excellent film and could set up a possible spinoff Grendel movie. Who WOULDN’T want that?
