Yes, we said thered be more zombie-flavoured romance. The most recent film on our list, this low-budget British production from writer-director duo Ben and Chris Blaine centres on a new romance between trainee paramedic Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and the severely bereaved Rob (Cian Barry), whose last girlfriend Nina (Fiona OShaugnessy) was not long since killed in a car crash. Tentatively, Holly and Rob start having sex and are alarmed to find that, whenever they do, Nina suddenly returns from the dead to share the bed with them. From the synopsis, its easy to expect something very kinky and broadly comedic from Nina Forever yet, while it certainly isnt short on sex and black humour, its quite a surprise to find just how grounded and emotionally realistic a film it proves to be. Questions of grief, fidelity and moving on are handled seriously, though obviously with a somewhat heightened touch, and yet the film always manages to stay the right side of melodrama. Its probably a bit too heavy for a first date movie, but its a hugely worthwhile experience which stands testament to the fact that modern horror movies can be a great deal more sensitive, intelligent and artful than theyre often given credit for.
