6. Trainspotting
Trainspotting could fill multiple lists of shocking moments. From getting up close and personal with the worst toilet in Edinburgh to a haunting cold turkey sequence, Danny Boyles second feature is a whirlwind of murky spectacle. Adding the icing to the disbelief cake of having Ewan McGregors Renton sleep with a schoolgirl, the silhouette of him naked is a shocking moment only beaten by the next scenes excrement from bed clothes to parents. Ewan McGregor has taken his kit off multiple times, in Young Adam and Velvet Goldmine (but thankfully not Star Wars), but this was the first time, marking the trend and helping define Trainspotting (and by default modern British cinema). The nature of the scene itself is particularly noteworthy. After the unknowing illegal act, he trickily removes the condom in a moment of sheer confusion. This is one of only a couple of moments on the list with obliquely sexual connotations, marking it out from the others.
