10 Movie Sequels That Outdid The Original

9. Gremlins 2: The New Batch

If the original Gremlins was a more conventional comic horror, Joe Dante's sequel, The New Batch, ratchets everything up to 11 and is as a result one of the most ludicrously entertaining sequels you're ever going to see. The New York setting allows Dante to satirise yuppies and corporate culture in general, and it also keenly includes a wealth of pop-culture nods (Hulk Hogan's cameo is near-genius), as well as plenty of meta, self-referential humour regarding the original film (film critic Leonard Maltin, who panned the original, appears briefly and is mauled by the Gremlins). Props to Joe Dante for managing to wrangle entire creative control, because one could imagine that this one would've read pretty poorly to a studio on the page. On the screen, however, it's a masterful live-action cartoon and far outdoes the more modest ambitions of the first film. I mean, Gizmo dresses up as Rambo for Christ's sake - what more do you want out of a movie?
