10 Reasons The Emperor’s New Groove Is The Best Disney Movie

Pull the lever, Kronk!

Between the modern successes of Tangled, Big Hero 6 and Frozen, and the 90s classics like The Lion King and Beauty And The Beast, Disney went through a dark period for a number of years. They struggled to connect with audience and experimented with all sorts of subject matter, garnering more misses than hits. But amongst that wasteland came a shining beacon of light, a modern, underrated Disney classic: The Emperor€™s New Groove. Originally imagined as an Incan version of The Lion King, the Emperor€™s New Groove would come to represent everything that Disney typically wasn€™t. It was an adult buddy comedy wrapped in the trappings of animals and slapstick humour. It appealed to both children and their parents, offering the perfect blend of action, comedy, and drama that so many films strive for. Taken individually, all of the elements that make the film work are pretty remarkable for a Disney film, but when combined, and looked at on a broad scale, it is apparent that this film needs to be held up higher in Disney€™s pantheon and in the minds of viewers. It€™s been 15 years since the film's release and it€™s time to properly acknowledge the reasons why this cult Disney favourite is one of the all time greats.
