10 Reasons Why Hellboy II: The Golden Army Is Still ICONIC

9. The Humor

Something that pretty consistently gets overlooked when it comes to the filmography of Guillermo del Toro is just what a remarkable and side-splitting sense of humor the man has.

And perhaps nowhere in his entire filmography is this more obvious than it is in Hellboy II. While the first film certainly had its moments, a huge component of Hellboy II's heart and entire identity as a film hinges on the humor.

Key character moments like Hellboy and Abe Sapien getting drunk together and singing along to Barry Manilow's 'Can't Smile Without You' weaponize humor and use it to cut to the very core of these characters and their motivations.

A huge part of what makes this sequel and these characters so endearing is that del Toro never forgets how wonderfully entrancing a good character-based comedic moment is.
