Having sat down in a chilly Central London screening room last night to soak in the fourth instalment of the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Legacy, I emerged unsurprised that the film wasn’t a particularly satisfactory outing, and felt like an attempt to ape the style and sophistication of the previous Matt Damon-starring films.
You can read my review of the film HERE.
Feeling pretty vocal about the film’s misgivings, I have concocted ten reasons below – some obvious to the sight unseen viewer, and some less so – as to why The Bourne Legacy was such a tremendous failure.
10. Jeremy Renner
While Jeremy Renner did indeed garner a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for his work as the protagonist of the Best Picture-winning The Hurt Locker, that film, for all of its propulsive action, focused on a subdued protagonist who didn’t have to be charismatic. In fact, the opposite was true; Bigelow’s sinewy action thriller won Academy honours because amid all of the warfare, it had subtle character inflexions, and an out-of-nowhere performance from Renner that demonstrated his fine acting chops.
For Bourne, however, when you’re going to inevitably be scrutinised against and compared to Matt Damon’s fantastic portrayal, you need to in some measure live up to that. Unfortunately, Renner doesn’t yet seem able to convince as a charismatic and sympathetic action star who audiences can get behind; he is the strong, silent type, which is fine for a brooding thriller – the type that director Gilroy would typically write for himself – but for a thriller that wants to be smart and exhilarating, the character needs more pep. Thus, when he eventually does spring into action, there’s little emotional attachment to what is going on, because we cannot identify with such a thoroughly bland and characterless protagonist. He is a cutout that could be matched by most blockbuster leads; we are told he is stronger and smarter than everyone else, but the gravity of that is never really played out, though this admittedly is not Renner’s fault alone.
However, he has always seemed more comfortable as a supporting player – as in The Town and The Avengers - and so the first mistake the film made ultimately was casting someone who wasn’t quite ready for this sort of blockbuster, lead star limelight. Who they could have cast instead, though, is anyone’s guess…

I can’t say I disagree with any of these 10 things that you listed. Being a big a fan of the first three films, I wanted to like this movie, but I was completely disappointed with it.
Out of everything that I didn’t like, the lack of action is right at the top of my list. If you’ve watched the trailer already, you’ve seen most of the action.
Hopefully they can bring back Damon and Greengrass and include a stronger story than the one in The Bourne Legacy.
The movie was pretty awesome to me!! Of course, it’ll have some mistakes. There’s no perfect movie in this world. I love the actors and the action scenes, but I do wish there was more action put in.
Wrong. First 3 Bourne movies were perfect. :D
Saw it last night and it was terrible. Bring back Damon and Greengrass plus Rachel Weisz, who i agree wholeheartedly was the single BEST thing about this film and we will have a real sequel.
I was worried when I saw the trailer that it was highly derivative. Most of the action seemed to parallel the previous movies like a roof top chase and motor bike escape. And while I enjoyed Renner in the Hurt Locker, he never looked quite right for the Bourne type character. I still haven’t seen the movie yet and doubt I will seeing that it got a 58 rotten score on RT.
This is a film website, you moron, it’s all about the opinions of the people who write the website.
this page sucks my pet elephants dick bro
I disagree with you. The only thing I’m agree is the plot seems bland since it looks like they don’t know how to continue the series. I love Jeremy Renner. He is much more talented actor than Damon.
Renner was amazing. I was afraid he couldn’t pull off a Bourne character but he was a totally different badass government agent: a whole new character that we haven’t seen in the last three films.
But the movie… Yeah I agree with all 10 you listed on here. The movie was crappy; editing was confusing at one point and the most importantly, lack of action scenes. The storytelling/its buildup was way too freaking slow and lame. A Bourne movie must be fast-paced and exhilarating and I think that was the biggest point this film missed. It had the right Bourne elements- it only failed to expand them far enough to satisfy the Bourne series fans. I suppose this movie was good enough for normal popcorn flick audience.
Matt Damon passed on this, I’m shocked…
simply, no story…
your 10 are certainly accurate, just overstating things
again, easy to see why Matt Damon passed–
Anyone who is worried about Matt Damon NOT being in a film needs their head examined (with the obvious exception of “Team America: World Police”).
Have not been to the movies for years. Yes the film sucks. Liked the big screen and the sound system. Will try to watch a few more films in the future will do more research next time though.
Good write-up!!!
The other films in the Bourne series have a good rhythm to them. They are well paced for the most part. This one isn’t….. -___-
They referred to the other movie so much, I would have rather watched it again.
I fell asleep…. And when I woke up the main characters were all safe on a boat going somewhere.
Skip it :)

Movie was very bad. The angles were so poorly shot you can see the stunt double. The driving scene was too long and seemed like most the moveie was talking (blow something up already!!!!. I will be shocked if the number remain strong with ticket sales. If that is the case they will return the old crew including Damon.
I cant completely agree with all of them, as I thought the 30 minute long and extremely boring chase scene totally ruined the movie for me… not including the extremely cheezy and poorly acted ending.
the lack of action wasn’t all that bad…
but the plot was just pathetic. +1 for the gene therapy and them getting their theories somewhat right… but everything else was just pathetic.
i was expecting a hand2hand combat scene with the Asian dood, but nooooooo he had to crash his bike…
on top of it, throughout the ENTIRE MOVIE! I was expecting Jason Bourne to pop out of no where and invite him into his own little secret organization to fight the big bad wolves.
at the end, it ended up feeling like a C class movie…
that’s right, not even a B.
Why is Jeremy Renner so famous and so wanted in movies ? i mean, what did he do ? was he jesus or jonah in his past life so he has to be awarded in this one ? … is kind of Shia LaBeouf case years ago when directors desperately wanted hin in any role, didn’t matter if he was or not the type ?…. i don`t get it but neither hate him or his job, i just would like to know what is the matter with this guy, i can’t see the terrific actor within… am i crazy, mistaken or something? PLEASE SOMEBODY ENLIGHT ME ! thanxs…
Interesting article, but I think the worst part of the film is that chase at the end. IMO it’s completely boring from beginning to end (not to mention uses constant quick cuts that help wreck it).
I just kept waiting for it to be over so we could get on with the actual story…. But instead it just…ended. That had to be the most jarring ending I can recall in any film. It doesn’t actually feel like we’re halfway through the story yet, and…queue the nifty theme song.
I disagree about cutting from the beginning, because IMO that’s by far the most interesting part, both for what Cross is doing, and the CIA. Cut 80-90% of that hideously long bike chase scene and then actually continue the story at least to some logical stopping place, and it would probably have been good. Cross claims to have a plan, but this film doesn’t bother telling us…we just end while still setting up the story, which feels really bizarre.
I still think the original Bourne Identity is the best of the 4 though. For me, each has gotten worse than the last.
There was nothing wrong with casting Jeremy Renner. By the way, the only reason why “Hurt Locker” won its Best Picture Academy Award was because the Academy did not want to give the award to “Avatar”, which back then, despite all the hatred it got, was undeniably THE movie that made people all over the world come out and pay to see a movie in cinemas again. “Hurt Locker” had great marketing, but as a movie, it was meh.
I will be brief. Greengrass sucked big time. He overused shakycam so much people run out of the cinema to puke. The action was the bloated, non-stop garish nonsense with poor choreography. Matt Damon is a non-actor – he has one facial expression and muscles. The plot was rubbish – omnipotent international secret organization chasing single guy around – please.
Completely agree with the reviewer. Watching Bourne Legacy was like watching the Star Wars Prequels.. Painful…
Good day people. Over the years, I have collected the “Bourne Trilogy” and eagerly awaited the fourth to come along. (The Legacy). I got it and in all the excitement, sat down to take this movie in on my HT system. This is the first time in my movie watching career, (45 years to date) I ever found myself having to endure such high class crap. They took this movie to the lowest low level that can be. The excitement is NOT there, at times, it was more like a Shakespeare play. The characters only, in most scenes with no background enhancements. To me, all the excitement I ever got was from the 2-3 minute trailer. I have nothing personally against the makers of this”MOVIE”, except the dept. that shortchanged the audience in many aspects of this movie: Most scenes are so dull, and lifeless. I made many attempts to stop it and abort watching this dvd torture, but I stayed on with the hope that it will get better, but really never did. I am greatly disappointed by this fourth : Legacy, (more like lunacy). Honestly, I cannot add this disc to my collection of the other 3. I am throwing this fourth one OUT ,in the trash. It is against my conscience to keep this one together with the other 3. When you watch the first 3 movies, you always felt that you were a part of the action, but this 4th one, you wonder if it’s a Shakespeare or Opera play. Sorry to say it, but this 4th one takes “watching torture” to a higher level. My opinion: the best thing about this movie is the TRAILER. Thanks. Soni
I agree with all of your points except for #3- I LIKED the understated, nonverbal love story; I am frequently annoyed and disgusted by the woman leaping into bed with the action guy, and I enjoyed the very slow development of it- hinting at a potential interest, not smashing you in the face with it. I don’t think it felt forced at all, with the hand holding- but then I think the actors brought a LOT to the script and to the relationship that wasn’t there; they have a nice onscreen chemistry. I liked Shearing and Cross’ dialogue better than most of the movie (and it was nice to have the woman rescue the action guy for once, even though, seriously? You have two super-assassins in a movie, you let them fight, especially when you get a fighter like Renner who can do his own stunt work.)
But I liked the relationship and the subtle setups it had. *shrugs* Less boring CIA crap, more Joan Allen, a Norton-Allen scene, less Bourne call-backs, and, well, less turgid dialogue and it would have been a potentially great movie.
