10 Remarkably Average Movies That Were Hyped To Crazy Levels

10. Prometheus

In 2012 Prometheus was both the most anticipated and most disappointing film of the year. At a glance you could assume it was both really over-hyped and really bad, but things are never as black and white as the fanboys scream them to be. Let€™s get this out of the way now - Prometheus is a perfectly good sci-fi flick. It€™s throwing out some grand ideas in an assured manner and makes great use of old school productions designs. So why so hated? It's all because the film had a very open production. Prometheus€™ first big mistake was Ridley Scott telling us what it was intended to be. Saying it was Alien prequel obviously got fans invested, but when the script moved away from those simple horror origins and that wasn't conveyed, all that was set up was disappointment. Later claiming it simply had €œAlien€™s DNA€ was intended to push fans away from the notion of a straight prequel, but everyone was too busy dreaming of Space Jockeys to listen. The marketing campaign only made things worse. Playing up the film€™s Alien parallels, it was the most spoiler-filled series of trailers in years. All but Guy Pearce€™s presence on the titular ship (which was incredibly obvious any way) was shown in excruciating detail. All this lead to a film not only bearing little resemblance to the prequel fans wanted, but containing no surprises. Fine if you avoided the hype, like black goo if you didn€™t.
