10 Songs That Became More Famous Than Their Movies

9. Eye Of The Tiger - Rocky III

Instantly recognisable from its opening power chords, Eye Of The Tiger is the backing to a million inspirational training montages. With its generic fighting talk about "taking chances", "going the distance" and "hanging tough, staying hungry", Eye Of The Tiger is just as easy to utilise in any uplifting scenario as it is to parody. We all know where it comes from, though. It's from Rocky, right? Except that it isn't. For all that the public imagination has conflated Survivor's grandstanding music with images of the Italian Stallion running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum Of Art or punching frozen meat carcasses, that was actually soundtracked by Bill Conti's theme Gonna Fly Now. Eye Of The Tiger actually appears in the rather less memorable Rocky III (it's the one with Mr. T and Hulk Hogan and the series' embracing of extreme cheesiness) and only then because Stallone couldn't get the rights to Queen's Another One Bites The Dust and rejected the Conti penned You're The Best (which eventually filled the exact same role in The Karate Kid, showing how interchangeable the training montage theme is). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgSMxY6asoE Eye Of The Tiger has sold over 9 million copies since 1982, putting it in the all time top 40 singles chart. Rocky III earned more than both its predecessors and is still a less memorable film.
