8. Meteorites - Armageddon vs. Deep Impact (1998)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yFzXNH2NO8 Deep Impact is a film directed by Roland Emmerich about a 7-mile wide comet that's about to collide with the Earth and cause total extinction, while a gang of scientists attempt to stop it before it's too late. Armageddon, directed by Michael Bay, is about a group of lower-class deep-core drillers who are sent on a last-ditch mission to prevent a gigantic asteroid from colliding with Earth. Meteor, asteroid, comet - three words to describe something that to most people means exactly the same thing. Which Came First: Deep Impact came out at the start of 1998's summer blockbuster season, whereas Armageddon came along 2 months later. Bruce Joel Rubin, who wrote Deep Impact, insists that when he had a script meeting for his film with a President at Disney, they took feverish notes on his script and then promptly set about making their own film with Bay. Disney's camp, apparently conscious of being compared to Deep Impact, spent an additional $3m on extra visual effects to help differentiate the film from what they basically ripped off. Which Was Better: Unquestionably, Deep Impact. Though neither film is fantastic, the direction is more solid, the acting is vastly superior (Elijah Wood and Morgan Freeman, damnit!), and the film works more on an emotional level. Also, scientists confirm that it is the more accurate of the two. Armageddon looks nice, but it's overly busy from a sensory perspective, the acting is atrocious, the love story sucks, and the use of Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" is just too damn sickly.
