The film culture of the early-21st century has been dominated by sequels, prequels, reboots and franchises. The growing insecurity of Hollywood in the face of piracy, the rise of online media and a resurgence in TV drama, has all led to a multitude of sequels designed to perpetuate the money-making ability of an idea for as long as humanly possible. In the process we’ve ended up with a lot of bad sequels, and today we’re marking the 10 follow-up films that we really could have done without.

For the purposes of this list I am discounting sequels that were straight-to-video, straight-to-DVD or even straight-to-TV like Highlander: The Source. This is because these were generally seen by far too few people to have done any real damage to a franchise: even if you hate American Psycho II or the straight-to-video Disney sequels, they’ve not resulted in their respective originals being deflowered by future cinema releases.

What we’re talking about today are cinematic sequels so bad that they damaged the reputation of the originals and tarnished all the good memories we have of them.
