10 Terrifying Horror Films That Will Haunt Your 2018

Lurking in the shadows...

The Strangers 2
Vertigo Entertainment

The horror genre has been a cauldron of remakes, reboots and sequels in 2017, but not all of them have been terrible, and fans have been treated to original scares too.

Annabelle: Creation proved a worthy entry to the Conjuring series, while Get Out was a chillingly unique fright fest with pointed social commentary at its core.

Genre veterans are also making a comeback, with everyone's favourite killer doll Chucky due to appear in straight-to-DVD sequel, Leatherface revving up his chainsaw for another prequel and Saw: Legacy laying a few traps in time for Halloween.

Proving there's still life in the horror remake and our old friend the Stephen King adaptation, Andy Muschietti's version of IT promises to reboot moviegoers' clown phobia something fierce when it floats onto cinemas in September.

In 2018, it's more of the same on the blood-stained slate. The sequels, threquels and prequels are well represented, as are the resurrected legends of yesteryear and the all-new nightmare creations looking to sink their fangs in when you least expect it.

10. Danny McBride's Halloween

The Strangers 2
Dimension

Danny McBride has probably spent most of his previous Halloweens in a smokey haze, but next year he's marking the occasion by bringing the original masked menace Michael Myers back to the big screen.

The Alien: Covenant star co-wrote the latest attempt at a Halloween reboot with series mastermind John Carpenter, which means there's a good chance it will end up in better shape than Rob Zombie's uninspired retread.

Little is known about what's in store for Haddonfield this time, but McBride has hinted that the franchise is heading back to its stealthy roots by depicting Michael as an insidious menace that lurks in the shadows, rather than an immortal killing machine.

Carpenter is also executive producing and may even provide the score, which is great news, while Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green is directing. Um, okay.
