10 Things To Expect From The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

Suzanne Collins' last book is being turned into two films. But what else do we know about it?

The Hunger Games has been a franchise explosion since the outset, breaking records and blowing previous massive franchises (cough Twilight cough) out of the water. Who would've thought that a few Young Adult books about children forced to fight to the death as a controlling device by a facist regime would be so popular? I'm sure not many people did, but as the second film, Catching Fire, was last year's highest grossing film in the US, there seems to be no stopping it. Mockingjay as a book has come under fire from some fans (and people who have never read it but have a lot of opinions) due to the marked change in pace that it has in comparison to both of its predecessors, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. It's true that Mockingjay will be much more difficult to translate into a film than the other two books, and the decision to turn it into two films has caused even more controversy around how it could possibly be recreated on-screen. It seems likely that a lot of creative license will need to be implemented, but that is to be expected. The key criticism appears to be that the book doesn't seem long enough to be split into two films, but it's important to remember that with the film we have the option to see things that aren't in Katniss' eyeline. The books are told in first-person by Katniss, and in the previous films we have been allowed to see things that she would not have known. With the outbreak of war and rebellion in the Districts there is a lot of potential for the filmmakers, but it will be hard to know what final decisions will be made in this adaptation. For now, however, we can only speculate, so that's exactly what we should do. Warning: Major spoilers for The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. Minor spoilers for Mockingjay, but mostly in a cryptic and hopefully un-spoiler-y as possible way.
