10 Things You Learn Rewatching Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)

7. The Mask Is Awful

Remember all the way back, during the Halloween 4 retrospective, when I warned you all that the Michael Myers masks would only get worse? Well, we've finally reached the end of that journey, because H20 has without question the worst mask of the entire franchise.

Michael has never looked worse, with a mask that is flat-out laughably awful. For a film that was so heavily concerned with rooting itself in nostalgia for the original film, it doesn't seem like a big ask for them to get Michael's one defining physical trait correct, but alas, it apparently was.

The mask became such a point of contention during production that there are actually four different masks used throughout H20. At an early in-house screening of footage an unnamed Miramax employee stood up and yelled;

"That's not Michael Myers!"

This sent the production team into a tizzy, working quickly to make a new mask to do reshoots with but they ultimately ran out of time, resulting in the several different masks appearing in the final cut, including one particularly painful moment where Michael's mask has been altered with CGI.

Needless to say, this undercuts a lot of the terror because Michael just looks ridiculous for the majority of the runtime.
