8. Up
In typical Pixar fashion, the premise of their tenth feature Up is a bonkers hard sell. An old man ties 20,000 balloons to his house and flies away to South America, accidentally bringing a young boy scout along for the ride. The film itself is Pixars unqualified best, emotively exploring loss through a child friendly adventure. But the trailers were way off. And in a way they had to be; when the crux of the film is an octogenarian dealing with his wifes death, youre not going to get parents rushing to take their kids. So we instead got a garish presentation of bright images highlighting the films action set pieces and making it feel like an overall jovial affair. The trailer even alters movie footage to make it appear a more rip roaring adventure. When the balloons are revealed Carl makes a rather childish raspberry, rather than the more restrained comment in the film. This alone could be enough to put off a more discerning viewer Its testament to Pixars name that they can produce such a shoddy, misleading trailer and still get away with it; Up was obviously gifted with one of their best critical reactions, but also a massive gross of $731,000 then their second highest earner after Finding Nemo. Clearly the reputation of the film for reducing grown men to tears won through, but if a films reputation can prove that strong, a trailer as brash as what Up had feels unnecessary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkqzFUhGPJg
