9. Would You Rather
What's It About? A young woman (Brittany Snow), seeking the considerable sum of money she'll need to help her sick brother, agrees to attend a dinner party at the house of a wealthy philanthropist.
Little does she know that to win the money she desires, she'll have to compete in a deadly game of 'would you rather' against a group of other players.
Why You Should Watch It: Saw arguably created the 'torture porn' sub-genre back in 2004 and with its incessant sequels, arguably went on to ruin it.
Pure violence for the sake of violence, the later films lacked a heart and an emotional punch, which is where Would You Rather gets things right.
From the opening moments we're introduced to Iris (Snow) and her brother, and we're shown their complex, difficult relationship, and in that instant, a strong emotional attachment is forged between the viewer and the onscreen action.
So when Iris is being tortured, electrocuted, submerged in water and subjected to a variety of other physical horrors, you're aching for her to pull through.
Would You Rather ends on a fairly sickening note, but it doesn't feel unearned; rather, it's fitting, given the film is all about the choices we make under pressure and where those choices lead us.
It's certainly not as deep as it thinks it is, but it's tense, enjoyable and twisted, but in an engaging way.
