In the world of corporate movie making The Walt Disney Company has transformed itself in recent years as the one of the key players, hoovering up its competitors and assimilating them into its monopoly-seeking mass and raking in huge sums of money in the process. The acquisition of Marvel - and a few years later Lucasfilm - positioned Disney at the very forefront of mass market entertainment, giving them one of the largest market shares in the industry (in 2014 the corporation came second to Fox Filmed Entertainment). While some feared their increased monopolisation would lead to a dip in quality, it has to be said that, while not all Disney releases are outstanding works of art, if ticket sales are anything to go by they clearly resonate with mainstream audiences. If anything, it's fair to say that the standard of Disney's movies has been on the up of late - the general consensus regarding the improvement in Marvel's Phase 2 over the initial run being one good measure to go by. Looking ahead, while there are some unnecessary sequels (the announcement of Toy Story 4 was met with a lukewarm reception, and do we really need another installment of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise?) there are also some hot new properties on the way, not least with Pixar finally getting round to working on fresh, new ideas.
