Norman Osborn's forgotten deadly condition, Uncle Ben’s killer not being found, and Irrfan Khan just vanishing are the biggest and most valid complaints with The Amazing Spider-Man. Still, while certain characters disappearing was proof of short-sighted writing, the ones that were written properly did have an impact and were not just tools for comedy like in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Sally Field’s Aunt May was emotionally supportive after the death of Uncle Ben, Gwen Stacy’s father regarded Spider-Man as a criminal but helped him defeat the Lizard, and even Flash Thompson exhibited character development by trying to comfort Peter over the death of his Uncle.

Similar to most Marvel movies, character development is pushed aside for laughs and giggles in Homecoming. Aunt May is never supportive and is only there for hot jokes, Flash is a stereotypical bully who gets his comeuppance through Peter stealing and ruining his Audi, and MJ is a dry, sarcastic and humourless girl who cannot smile and has even less of a soul than the original ginger from the comic books.

Both films had wasted characters with no arc or real involvement, but while The Amazing Spider-Man made up for its shortcomings with some actual progression, Spider-Man: Homecoming did nothing for fans to forgive its shallow mishandling of poorly imitated characters.
