The Flash's solo film (if it ever gets a release date) will be based on the Flashpoint arc, a time-hopping story that deals in parallel universes and status quo-smashing events.

In the comic books, Barry Allen's timeline-bending antics eventually result in three universes converging and drastically altering DC Comics' lineup of heroes and villains, as well as the world they inhabit.

Having this play out on screen would give Warner Bros and DC the chance to remould the DC Extended Universe into something completely different, in an organic way that ties in with the overarching story. Certain roles could be recast, while other characters could undergo a design change with the same actor on board.

Rumours that Ben Affleck is seeking an exit strategy appear to have substance behind them, and Henry Cavill's long-term future as Superman is uncertain following reports that he has one movie remaining on his contract.

After the events of Flashpoint, the franchise could emerge drastically altered, with some elements of the DCEU of old, but different enough to be considered a new beginning for Warner's DC movie ambitions.
