10 Ways What If... Could Change The MCU

A lot of little moments could spin the universe on a dime in the MCU.

We knew that Marvel was planning to push forward with a What If show on streaming service Disney+, but until San Diego Comic Con, we didn’t know much more than that. However, like other Disney+ shows WandaVision, Hawkeye, Loki and Falcon & The Winter Soldier, the picture of the future looks clearer now.

The show will be animated and will be guided by Jeffrey Wright (best known for roles in Hunger Games, James Bond and Westworld) playing a Watcher. As the title suggests, it proposes some What Ifs for the MCU.

Rather than look at the most extreme alternate dimension stories (although they’d be great to see too), this list is more of a butterfly effect deal. By looking at some little changes to the MCU’s established canon, it’s possible there’ll be big consequences down the road.

These are the types of What If story that could make the show so compelling.

We already know a lot of the confirmed cast for the show, so it’s possible to base some predictions around that. However, given the complete surprise of Blade being sprung on us at SDCC, there’s definitely other stars yet to be revealed who might pop up too.

10. What If The Avengers Never Time Travelled?

There’s so much you could pick apart and What If in Infinity War and Endgame, but for the sake of variety Thanos centric What Ifs will bookend the list as the first and last entry.

This is an ideal sort of What If, as it covers a scenario we knew was never going to happen yet still had lots of people very interested: What If they never time travelled, as in What If they killed Thanos, but then life went on.

This means exploring more of Bro Thor playing Fortnite with Korg and being depressed, more of Hawkeye as Ronin, more of Black Widow running Avengers HQ and more of Tony’s retired life.

Though Natasha’s administrative work is easily the least exciting on paper, the thought of seeing Rocket, Captain Marvel, Nebula, War Machine and Okoye doing various missions probably has the most legs. If Disney really wanted to, there could be a two or three parter of a story post Thanos’ death without the Avengers reversing the Snap.

More detail on Hawkeye’s vengeance would be welcome, as well as what’s going on with Wakanda’s succession now. There’s a lot to explore in this scenario.
