10 Worst Performances In 2017 Movies (So Far)

1. Adam Sandler - Sandy Wexler

Charlie Hunnam King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
Netflix

Sandy Wexler is another Adam Sandler movie where Adam Sandler plays a slightly different version of a previous Adam Sandler character, complete with all the toilet humour, cheap celebrity appearances, and predictable 'zero to hero' story arc that's been in most of his movies since Billy Madison.

As the titular character, Sandler is as bad as we've come to expect; his grating voice (which is cut and pasted from his character in The Waterboy) awkward jokes, and lame physical comedy are all present and correct, and since Wexler is in basically every shot in the movie, there's no respite. It's relentlessly annoying to watch.

Sandler's doing that thing where he plays an adult who's child-like in every conceivable way, in an attempt to make the character more innocent and likeable.

The problem is that this is how Wexler stays for the entire movie. He never learns, and he doesn't change. He's stupid at the start and he's stupid at the end. Instead of sympathising with him, you'll just become infuriated. Why do all Sandler's characters lack common sense?

About 20 minutes in, the film will turn into a game of 'spot the celebrity cameo', because there's no other enjoyment to be had. It's the same Sandler performance you've been watching for well over ten years, and in that time, the man has done nothing to up his game.
