With the glorious news last week that the long-gestating, frequently cancelled Metal Gear Solid movie was back on track, fanboys the world over began contemplating one of the most important questions – who is going to be cast in the damn thing? It’s a move that the film’s developers, hopefully keeping series creator Hideo Kojima on-side throughout, will have to decide carefully; choose right and they’ve got a film franchise words hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of dollars, but cast the thing badly and the series’ loyal fanbase won’t bite.
Having thought long and hard, here are our dream casting ideas for the impending MGS movie.
1. Christian Bale is Solid Snake
There are several fantastic actors who have been listed over the years to play the series’ beloved, gruff-voiced protagonist, and some of the better choices include Hugh Jackman and Viggo Mortensen, but Christian Bale feels like the best fit to us because he’s such a firm champion of both art-house fare and blockbusters, such that he will bring an astronomical level of credibility to the film on both sides of the coin. Having proven time and time again that he can both live up to physically demanding roles, and absolutely nail an American accent, as well as reportedly having an interest in taking the role – much to the glee of MGS fans everywhere – this could be a hugely fortuitous fit for everyone involved, as long as the filmmakers can lock down a rock-solid script, as didn’t happen with Bale’s fanboy project Terminator Salvation. And, well, he’s had plenty of practise growling with his recent work on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy…

Some good choices, there. I have a weird fantasy that Paul Rudd plays Otacon.
If David Hayter doesn’t play Solid Snake, the movie is already ruined.
I thought it was already said that Hayter wasn’t going to star in the movie. He may be the voice of Solid Snake but he’s said before (I think) that he isn’t too good with on screen performances. Although I would love to see him as Snake, I don’t think it’s happening.
Love Uma Thurman as Sniper Wolf. What about Decoy Octopus? Although we only see him as himself briefly in MGS
Christian Bale is British and would not be a good Solid Snake, nor would Hugh Jackman because he’s too fruity and starts in over-the-top superhero movies that no one takes seriously. If they really want a good Snake, they need to get Viggo Mortenson, Sean Bean, or Tom Hardy. They are all rugged guys that could play Snake, not pretty boys, which Snake is not supposed to be.
Dude, your whole argument has collapsed on itself. Bale is British, no argument there. However, so are Sean Bean and Tom Hardy. Besides what difference does it make whether an actor is of a certain nationality. There’s no rule that says a British actor can’t play an American and vice versa.
Personally out of the actors you’ve mentioned Bale is probably the only one who could pull off Snake. He’s got the skill, charisma and ruggedness to play the character. I’ve got nothing against the other actors but I just don’t see any of them playing Snake. Maybe Jackman but not the others.
Uma needs to be The Boss. Anna Torv would be a better Sniper Wolf
To Cody and Nate, Christian Bale has played the tough guy but not to the level of Viggo Mortensen. Speaking of accents Viggo speaks several languages fluently to the point of working all over the world. He’s broke bones and a tooth and still finished the scenes before anyone knew there was a problem. The fight scene in Eastern Promises left him so bruised the make up guy was complaining about having to cover the bruise’s before he could apply the tattoos. When things go wrong on shoots he has pulled other actors on through so the didn’t have to do it again. He’s one great actor, and he’s one sexy man. I’m still mad about Eastern Promises two being canceled.
Cate blanchett is the boss
Yes, exactly. Perfect.
I like the idea of one actor playing both Liquid and Solid so I see Bale taking the parts as pretty spot on. That being said I have just always seen Eric Bana as Solid. And why no mention of Gray Fox?
Although doubtful, it would be awesome if Clint Eastwood played Ocelot. Also, Vulcan Raven should be played by an actual Native American or Inuit, there are a lot of great Native American actors in Canada, and I hate it when Hollywood screws up, imagine if film watchers think Raven was supposed to be black? Or worse, people think black people live in the arctic? No. Who would play Gray Fox?
Perfect choice as having Dwayne Johnson as Vulcan Raven, who else would could carry 10000 rounds of ammunition and a minigun and still be a formidable opponent. The Rock.
sorry i love bale but hugh jackman is solid snake he looks just like him
and is a great actor and he has been kojima’s #1 choice for years
Jodie foster or cate blanchett to be the boss.
Christian bale or chris helmsworth if he dyed his hair like snakes to be snake.
Jason Schwartzman to be otacon.
Liam neeson to play ocelot.
Jake gylenhall or sam worthington to play liquid
Mary elizabeth winstead to play meryl or maybe ellen page
Anthony Hopkins is a good actor, but I don’t think he’s the right choice. I like the idea of Christian Bale playing Solid Snake. That would be the coolest thing ever. Other than that I just hope they use someone who really knows how to make a espionage film. That Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy comes to mind.
If vulcan raven would be part of the movie he should be played by dwayne the rock johnson.
Hes obviously the right physique for the role and hes hawaiin I believe which would close enough to raven’s heritage. He could have been native american im not sure. I only know the character was a shaman from alaska which is some type of priest.
chritian bale is a good actor but i suggest josh holloway he looks like snake/liquid and can act really well from scene of lost. my take on big boss has to be hugh jackman the perfect fit. for old snake clint eastwood, if he is still around. colonel cambell as bryan cranston the boss uma Thurman cause she has been in fighting movies i.e kill bill. meryl Danneel Harris thats all i got
Fastbender as liquid. he would play a perfect role there
If you take Sean Bean for Liquid, then it should be Viggor Mortensen for Solid. I always mixed them up the first time looking The Lord of the Rings. Olso, they both look more similar to Kurt Russell, who fits good to Big Boss (for another Movie). Not to be confused with Sean Connery for the older Big Boss ;)
This was an amazing article! Great work. It’s obvious that you put a lot of thought into your choices, and they’re damn good. Really glad I read it.
