1. Battle Royale

Predating Saw by four years, the explosive Japanese film that pits schoolchildren against each other in a bid to have one last child standing has to take pride of place on the list. Ever wonder where The Hunger Games came from? We have Kinji Fukasaku to thank for that.

Dropping 42 classmates onto a deserted island and arming them with various navigational and combat equipment, the film is a wild, gory ride from start to finish - as outlandish as it is entertaining. The survival game never had the stakes so high, and Fukasaku’s influence spread far and wide throughout the filmic world, bringing new dimensions to Kill Bill, Shaun of the Dead, and many other movies in the same vein.

Even now, Battle Royale remains relevant, with games such as Fortnite revolving around a competitive survival mode - the genre fondly named after the movie. Even more reason to love it.
