12 Blatant Copycat Movie Pairs (And Which Was Better)

10. Jobs & Steve Jobs

A Bugs Life Antz
Open Road/Universal

Not so close in terms of release dates Jobs and Steve Jobs were released two years apart but as they’re both biopics of the same cultural icon (that’s Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in case the titles didn’t give it away), they’ve been clumped together. However, they’re actually very different movies or at least more different than some of the copycats on this list.

In Jobs, it’s a surprisingly good Ashton Kutcher who takes on the eponymous role as the films follows the hippy-turned-tycoon from his college days in the mid-1970s through to the launch of the iPod in 2001. Michael Fassbender plays the man behind the cult of Apple in Steve Jobs which focuses on three specific time periods just prior to the launch of three pivotal products.

Which One Was Better?

Like many biopics, the focus in each movie is on entertainment rather than accuracy. At face value, Steve Jobs seems to be the more accurate movie with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak acting as consultant but if either movies’ detractors’ reactions are anything to go by – former Apple employee Bill Fernandez called Jobs “fan fiction” while Steve Jobs screenwriter Aaron Sorkin was accused of cherry-picking – both took ample creative licence.

Accuracy issues aside, it’s Steve Jobs that’s the better film and there’s no doubt that the talents of Sorkin, Fassbender and director Danny Boyle are a winning combination.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
