12 Reasons Why Casablanca is the Greatest Film of All Time

4. Immortal Quotes

Casablanca contains some of the most memorable and oft-quoted lines of all time. The AFI 2005 list of the top 100 movie quotes includes six different lines from Casablanca - more than any other film. Many of these lines have become so seamlessly ingrained in our culture that only us movie nerds know they came from Casablanca. "Here€™s looking at you, kid" - Repeatedly said to Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) by Rick (Humphrey Bogart) "Play it again, Sam" - This line is actually never spoken in the movie. You will hear "Play it once, Sam", "Play it, Sam", "Sing it, Sam" and simply "Play it", but you will never hear "Play it again, Sam". "Round up the usual suspects" - So famous is this line that there's even a movie called The Usual Suspects. "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" - This is another frequently misquoted line. "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine" "I€™m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here" - You will hear this line repeated constantly. Of course, it's always something else that the speaker is shocked about, such as "I'm shocked, shocked that Bob left town" or maybe "I'm shocked, shocked to find out that she's a man", but the point is that the whole "shocked, shocked" part is immortalized in our everyday speech. This is the only line on my list that is not included in AFI's top 100 Quotes list, and frankly I'm shocked, shocked that it isn't. "We€™ll always have Paris" - This sentence is repeated over and over in current culture, often by changing Paris to some other locale. There's even a Ray Bradbury book and a Star Trek The Next Generation episode titled We'll Always Have Paris and a Hercules: The Legendary Journeys episode titled We'll Always Have Cyprus.
