Unquestionably one of the year's most shocking, controversial and talked-about scenes was pure, distilled nightmare fuel, as Darren Aronofsky's bible-themed thriller concluded with Mother (Jennifer Lawrence) giving birth to her infant son.
Once Mother falls asleep, her husband, Him (Javier Bardem), takes their son to introduce him to his crowd of followers who have camped out at the house, and before long, the baby is being passed around the crowd, who quickly break his neck.
Mother awakens to the commotion and runs through the crowd to find her son mutilated and being eaten by the crowd, causing a fight to break out that results in Mother burning the house down.
The unforgettable imagery, Lawrence's excellent performance and the thoroughly unpleasant sound design all conspire to make this one of the most discomforting movie scenes of the last few years.
